For SATB choir and piano, c.4'55
The well-known text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow explores common questions that are still relevant today, particularly as we witness suffering in the world around us. Longfellow wrote his poem on Christmas Day in 1863, following the tragic death of his wife in a fire and the wounding of his son during the American Civil War. These personal losses shape his text, wrestling with despair while searching for meaning and peace. This musical setting responds to the poem in a dramatic way, moving from sadness to darkness and despair before arriving at hope, where we must ultimately end when grappling with such questions. The piano accompaniment acts as a steady heartbeat throughout, at times also suggesting a tolling bell, alternately warning or celebrating. The vocal lines may be shaped like a hymn, but in the quieter, dark moments, it can almost be whispered.
