This work is an arrangement of Edmund Sear’s well-known Christmas poem It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (1849). Its message of peace remains resonant today as when it was first written. In 2022, when this arrangement was composed, the world was entering a third year of global pandemic while also witnessing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. These events sat in stark contrast in my mind, both existential threats, yet one a unifying challenge met with human ingenuity, the other a destructive expression of hatred. Sears’ call for peace felt contemporary.
