Two Elizabethean Pieces

A Pavane is a slow processional dance, usually in duple metre, with three repeated sections (AABBCC). This Pavane is based on a piece for Daniel Bacheler for two bass viols.

A Browning is an Elizabethan musical form based on the melody of a popular song (‘The Leaves Be Green’). The melody is repeated in a contrapuntal texture. In this case the 8 bar melody is first stated by Alto Saxophone 1 and then repeated by various instruments nine times. The arrangement is based on several Brownings of the period, principally one by William Byrd.
