Piano Concerto No. 1

This concerto for piano and orchestra was composed in 1991 and commissioned by Sally Mays, a well known Australian pianist from Melbourne who has spent most of her life in London. Included in the large orchestra is a bass clarinet (which imitates the sound of the didjeridu) and clapstick which are intended to give a tone colour that emphasises the aboriginal origin of the melodies used in the slow movement and last movement.
