Quintet in E minor

For Piano and String Quartet, c.17'00

The work is in a single movement but has two sections distinctive by different characters. In keeping with Hutchens’ compositional language, it uses impressionistic harmonies while maintaining an overall strong sense of diatonic tonality, that of E minor. The one-movement form utilised by many composers at that time was described by Hutchens as a phenomenon thus: “Of course the reason why a one- movement form is
growing popular nowadays is that composers who have other occupations need a form that can be completed more or less quickly.
