The texts for Sacred Songs: Book I are drawn from a wide range of sources: the Dao de Ching (4th century BCE China), Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Nature (1836), the poetry of Hermann Hesse (Manchmal, 1904), the poetry of Sappho (5th and 6th century BCE Greece), and one of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus (Da stieg ein Baum, 1922). Although diverse in their origins, they are strikingly similar in their sentiment; those cherished moments, thoughts, and places in which we are our best selves.
Sacred Songs; moments that are sacred not because they are deemed so by any religious tradition or purpose, but because their very nature sparks reverence apart from any religious association. It is within this landscape these Sacred Songs dwell, an attempt to recognize a place between religion and nothingness, were moments and places consecrated by and to the human heart.
