Satelite (Telstar)

Duet for piano.

Satellite is one of a set of keyboard works written on the theme of ‘outer space’. I believe there is no sound in outer space but in these pieces there is. And in Satellite, the minimalist texture of the two players at the piano circles through a short chord series, which when repeated weaves a more intricate texture with the morse code of a satellite beaming its message to whoever is listening. The satellites I have in mind are Telstar I and II launched in the early 1960s both of which are still orbiting but not in use as communication devices. [DB]
