I first met Henry Kendall’s poem September in Australia when I was in primary school, and lines from it have haunted me over the 70-odd years since. The idea of making a choral setting struck me in September 2022, and after reading the poem again I decided to extract four of the eight stanzas to do this. I have tried to do justice to Kendall’s imagery, as well as some of what seemed to me to be meanings hinted at in the poem.
