Small Pearls

Three pieces for toy piano c.5'35

Small Pearls are three short pieces for toy piano, using two-part texture, each with a different story. ‘Lament’ is influenced by a lament in another work, Mixtape, for instrumental ensemble, composed around the same time. ‘Pearls’ is just that – a series of pentatonic textures strung together into a whole. And ‘Tunings’ explores the pentatonic shape of the Japanese hira-joshi koto tuning, extending a fragment started many years ago, and influenced by the ethnomusicology teaching of Peter Sculthorpe.
