Tears of Guudhamang

The name ‘Cootamundra’ is said to be derived from the Wiradjuri word ‘guudhamang’, meaning turtle. In this work I have made Guudhamang at first contemplative, perhaps remembering a time of peace before the arrival of Europeans. Guudhamang then becomes angry at the destruction, cruelty and change that occurred as the first European farmers cleared the land, ushed out the original inhabitants and established a permanent settlement. Guudhamang finally returns to his melancholy reflections. [FG]
