At some stage in our life we seem to remember our past with increased vividness. We remember our childhood in particular.

This CD Violets are Blue is about these memories. Inspired by Bela Bartok’s miniature pieces For Children (of which we include a sample), we asked several composers for their musical thoughts on childhood. Ann Carr-Boyd composed a new suite for two keyboards which flamboyantly expresses some of the ups and downs of childhood, from joy to overcoming frustration, tantrums, and confrontation Diana Blom’s Ballpark transposes the everyday rhythms of ball games into music. Elena Kats-Chernin’s Rain Puzzle reflects the absorption of solitary occupation, but doesn’t exclude the presence of a friend. But it is Violeta Dinescu’s two collections of miniatures that really takes the listener into a magical, childish world of the imagination.
