SATB choir, c.6'30This musical homage to Aboriginal artist, Namatjira (1902-1959) is a reworking of the 1996 composition commissioned by the Australian Voices Youth Choir. The musical texture is concerned with the layering and juxtaposition of colour, the subtlety of the painter’s use of shadow and a sense of bursting into light.

The creative aesthetic behind this project is to have a strong intercultural focus featuring Asia-Pacific traditions of Korean samul nori drumming techniques, Filipino kulintang percussion, Japanese shakuhachi 'moment' aesthetic and East Asian string techniques (Korea, Japan, China) interacting with contemporary music. The trajectory from modern violin through to Chinese erhu and Korean kayageum techniques interacting within contemporary composition and cutting edge digital technology forms a thread behind this collection. The sound of Asia-Pacific gongs (Korea, China, Philippines) intersecting with modern percussion as an enlargement of the contemporary music tradition in performance and composition is another angle. Finally the use of the techniques of reed membrane and coloured breath from Western clarinet to Japanese shakuhachi exploring the 'single-note' aesthetic of East Asia within contemporary composition and improvisation also forms a focus. Cross-cultural percussion and dance. c.12'00A cross cultural 'comprovisation' for musician and dancer, using mainly percussion (tuned and non tuned) instruments and sound making objects. The piece is developed through an improvisation on composed motives, number sequences and irregular rhythms. This is tempered by a collaborative interaction with a dancer. The dancer listens, watches and engages with an eclectic mix of instrumental colours and textures; the musician watches, listens and responds to a vocabulary of dance gestures; chooses material according to the ebb and flow of the interaction that occurs. Jiriyai! means war cry in the Sydney language. It is dedicated to Pemulwuy, who led a resistance movement against invading Europeans.
